Full reports on housing & business land positions
Auckland is in danger of having land shortages for both business & housing.
Strategic policy analyst Brian Waddell told the Regional Growth Forum’s 19 February meeting, on the issue of land for housing: “New vacant land supplies will not be enough to meet the shortfall.”
Manukau’s mayor, Sir Barry Curtis, gave an instance of an international company not moving from Melbourne because Manukau couldn’t provide the right land parcel.
He also said the land that was left was generally in small parcels, and unless the supply flow was rectified the region wouldn’t be able to maintain the rate of economic growth that it wants.
Senior regional council planner Joy Grant was less alarmed about the business land shortfall, saying what was required was co-operation between local bodies: “There’s 17 years of land left. We have to work with local authorities & the regional economic development strategy (Areds), getting a study under way immediately.”
