Draft coastal plan prepared for Algies Bay

Published 14 May 2006

The Rodney District & Auckland Regional Councils have prepared a draft coastal compartmental management plan for Algies Bay.

Submissions opened on Friday and close on Thursday 12 July. They’re being handled at the district council

The purpose of the plan is to identify community needs & coastal issues and propose actions to address them.

Algies Bay is immediately south of Snell’s Beach on the south-western shore of Kawau Bay. Its current population is 758 and it has 366 houses.

The draft plan report says: “The proposed district plan identifies potential for significant expansion of the existing urban area, subject to infrastructure requirements. This urban expansion and the growth of adjoining areas will increase visitors & vehicular traffic, exacerbating existing parking and use conflicts during peak use periods. The growth will also potentially exacerbate other coastal management issues and place increasing pressure on both natural & amenity values unless managed in a sustainable & integrated manner.
