Retail sales rose 8.1% in December over December 2003, after a 9.6% increase in November & 4.3% in October.
Statistics NZ, in its quarterly retail survey, turned this into a 1.1% seasonally adjusted gain for the quarter. The figures below are actual, not seasonally adjusted, and for the month of December not the quarter.
Total sales were $5.8 billion, including $1.3 billion of vehicle & automotive trade sales.
Car sales were worth $697 million, up 8.2%. Fuel sales were worth $415 million, up 16.2% on December 2003 but down from a 26% rise in November.
Furniture & floor covering sales rose 17.3%, appliance sales 17%, personal & household goods hiring 16.1%, cafÃ©s & restaurants 15.5%, takeaways 15.1%.
