Published 26 September 2007Foodstuffs (Auckland) Ltd is building a $36 million distribution centre near Auckland International Airport for its joint-venture produce business Foodstuffs Fresh.
The 9000m² centre on Pavillion Drive, Airport Oaks, will replace the business’s East Tamaki warehouse. It’s a joint venture with the Carter & Spencer Group of Australia and will eventually employ double the number of staff, going from 50 to 100 employees.
Foodstuffs (Auckland) Ltd property development general manager Murray Jordan said: “It’s going to revolutionise the way we deal with our fresh produce. Produce will be delivered from the farm gate direct to the centre, and from there it will be packed to order for distribution to our stores across the upper half of the North Island.”
He said the East Tamaki site only had the capacity to deal with Foodstuffs’ Auckland & Northland stores.
“With all the produce coming into one centre, we’ll be able to ensure even better quality for our customers by being able to control the conditions in which the produce is kept from the minute it is delivered by the supplier to when it is sold instore.”
Mr Jordan said the centre should open before the end of the year.
