Vehicle sales up 16.6%
Retail sales topped $4 billion for the fourth month this year with an 8.7% increase in July over July 2001 sales, according to Statistics NZ figures released on Friday.
Vehicle sales continued at a high level — a 16.6% increase in car sales for the month, to $642 million, but a 2.5% increase in vehicle services to $604 million. Total sales excluding the vehicle trade rose 8.4% to $2.85 billion.
The other big retail sector to gain was furniture & floor coverings, up 14.8% to $115 million. Food retailing rose 8.3% to $939 million.
Sales in the Auckland rose 7.2% to $1.34 billion, in the Waikato 13.4% to $396 million, in the South Island excluding Canterbury by 13.1% to $440 million. Take out vehicle sales, and the Auckland increase was 6.4%, Waikato 11.5%, non-Canterbury South Island 12.3%.
All figures above exclude gst and are actual sales totals & movements compared to the same month last year, not trend or seasonally adjusted figures.
