New house consents hit 9-year high but other sectors quiet

Building consents for new houses in May were at their highest level since August 2007, but it was a quieter month in the more intensive dwelling categories.

Statistics NZ said 2520 new homes were consented in May, up 16.4% on the 2171 a year ago. New houses made up 1956 (1587 last May) of the total, up 23.3%. However, there was only one more consent for apartments (126, compared to 115 a year ago), retirement village units were down 8.8% to 121 (184) & suburban townhouses & flats rose 16.4% to 327 (285).

Consents for the last 12 months totalled 28,387, up 13% from the 25,114 in the previous 12 months.

Total consents for new homes, additions & alterations were up 24.1% in value for the month to $1.078 billion ($868 million), and up 17.5% for the year to $11.4 billion ($9.7 billion).

Auckland consents for May were up 12.4% at 732 (651), Northland had 114 (61), Waikato 317 (254), Bay of Plenty 242 (145), Canterbury 618 (549).

Consents for non-residential buildings nationally were up 1.1% for the month to $492 million ($486 million), and up 8.5% for the year to $5.86 billion ($5.4 billion).

The value of all consents was up 14.1% for the month to $1.59 billion ($1.4 billion), and up 14.6% for the year to $17.8 billion ($15.5 billion).
