Safari Group (NZ) Ltd will build its third Ramada hotel in New Zealand at the Remarkables Park Town Centre at Frankton, Queenstown.
Auckland-based Safari (Robert Neil & Stephen Taylor) is building 3 Quest hotels in the Beaumont Quarter in Auckland (completed), at Taupo and in Wellington, and is building Ramada hotels in Rotorua & Christchurch. Ramada is part of the worldwide US-based Wyndham Hotel Group, which has 7800 sites internationally.
The company has applied to the Queenstown Lakes District Council for resource consent for a $25 million, 48-room, 6-apartment hotel to be built next to the planned convention centre at Remarkables Park, and hopes to start work before Christmas, opening by Christmas 2015.
The 4-level 5000m² hotel will be built in a new high street area opposite the new Wakatipu High School.
Mr Neil said a key tenant had been secured for the ground-floor café and the complex would also include 8 boutique stores.
The 2- & 3-bedroom apartment suites will be on the top floor, which will also have 400m² of commercial office space. The building will have 34 underground & 22 outdoor parking spaces.
Mr Neil said Remarkables Park’s proposed multi-million dollar convention centre had been a major motivator for the hotel development: “That’s certainly one of the main reasons behind our decision, but it’s not the only one. The economic development & growth of the wider Frankton Flats area is also a big drawcard.
“The evolution of Frankton & Remarkables Park is so significant that we want to be involved. There’s nothing else like this in the area and we believe it presents a huge opportunity.”
Remarkables Park lodged a resource consent application last month to build a 2700m² convention centre, providing for up to 900 delegates.
