Vaping produces a new line of waste from e-cigarettes, which has led to a new line in recycled products.
Vape suppliers Vapo (VEC Ltd) & Alt NZ Ltd partnered in December with US recycling pioneer TerraCycle Inc’s New Zealand subsidiary to collect waste vaping devices & pods at the 11 Vapo stores in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch & Nelson.
Today, TerraCycle opened recycling by post, which participants sign up to.
TerraCycle general manager Jean Bailliard said the company would turn vaping waste into products such as outdoor furniture, though the process was complex: “The process of recycling e-waste is far more complex than traditional forms of waste, however it is not impossible. As TerraCycle’s mission is to eliminate the idea of waste, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to prove that technically, everything is recyclable.
“We will turn the waste into new products such as outdoor furniture, something we have done many times in the past. This moves waste from a linear system to a circular one, allowing it to keep cycling in our economy.”
For every kilogram of vaping equipment sent to TerraCycle, Vapo & Alt NZ will donate $1 to the Sustainable Coastlines charity.
TerraCycle disassembles & separates vaping devices into their different metal & electrical components, batteries & plastics. The plastics are then shredded & melted into pellets that can be remoulded to make new recycled products such as garden beds & park benches, while the metals & batteries are separated & recovered.
